FlashGot: Firefox extension
The main reason that I am still using Firefox instead of Google Chrome, is because I need those extensions, which Google Chrome cannot support.
FlashGot, this is one of my favourite extensions (add-ons). Previously, FlashGot does not help me a lot for my surfing experience. This is because FlashGot only provides the feature that we can use external download utilities, instead of built-in download from Firefox itself.
So, what is the strength now? It is able to grab the flash video file: flv or f4v. Yes, I can download the video from YouTube using FlashGot. Previously, I need to use DownloadHelper to do so, but now, FlashGot itself is able to handle this problem.
libgooglepinyin: Pinyin input method for Linux
In my opinion IBus (Intelligent Input Bus) is the most popular input framework for Linux. Previously, SCIM is the most common input framework. This is because Ubuntu uses IBus as its default input framework currently.
There are two Chinese pinyin input for IBus, one is ibus-pinyin, another is ibus-sunpinyin. I prefer ibus-pinyin, since it is more common, and support the Traditional Chinese character; sunpinyin does not.
But today, I found another input method, that is libgooglepinyin, it is a fork from Google Pinyin for Android. Whoever uses Google Pinyin before should know that it is faster than a normal pinyin method, it works like Sogou Pinyin. It is available for Arch Linux using AUR. Super good.
Moonlight: Silverlight alternative for Linux
Recently, I visited the China website for listening some songs using Firefox 7.0, and found that I need a plugin called Moonlight, since I am using Linux.
So, this Moonlight is the Silverlight alternative for Linux. If you visit the website such as 1ting.com, then this is what you need.
However, Moonlight xpi file is not compatible to Firefox 7.0. Thus, some modifications towards the xpi file is needed. If using Arch Linux, it is available in AUR (submitted by me).
Notes Taking
I used to “love” MS OneNote a lot a lot…
(yes in a way, I still do, but you know how much you need to pay for the whole MS Office Suite right??)
it’s just designed in a way, as if you’re taking notes with your conventional notebook (those professional types, with pink/blue tags on top and bla bla bla…)
and the look’s really interesting and easy to use…
what more to say, you don’t have to click “save”, and you can just put any pictures you like, anything… it’ll appear just as how you expect it to look like, as if you’re doing it handwrittenly…
SMPlayer
Yah, after posting about VLC, now it is SMPlayer. What is so good about SMPlayer? SMPlayer, playing the RMVB file is smoother than VLC. I don’t know why. Next, playing the f4v file (Flash video), the video is also smoother than VLC.
So, because of the needs or watching RMVB movie and f4v movie, that is why I use SMPlayer frequently.
But under Linux, there is a small problem about SMPlayer to play the video with a separate subtitle with Chinese encoding, namely GBK. To play the video in the Unicode locale, the subtitle will shows the characters with underline only. To get the locale of your Linux, enter “locale” in the command-line, it will show something like this,
Ubuntu Tweak for me...
ok.. a short one here,
and a very layman one here…
see… I’m not that technical afterall…
neither windows, nor linux…
and I’m definitely note one of this background…
ie. can talk, cannot do…
but on and off, I come across problem on my own linux desktop, ie. ubuntu…
and on and off… besides, asking my more techy brother, ie. the real owner of this blog…
I’ll have to search on the internet first, before, I actually ask him any questions… (though, asking him, is definitely very very very convenient, ^_^)
VLC
Actually I am using two movie players in my Linux. One is VLC, the other is SMPlayer. Both are cross platform. Comparing VLC and SMPlayer, each of them has its own advantage, that is why I use both.
The features that VLC can do, which SMPlayer cannot do, is that VLC can play the MIDI file with the SoundFont. This is something nice in Linux. Because playing MIDI file in Linux unlike Windows, need a SoundFont file and some configuration.
XnView
XnView is my favourite image browser. Free and rich features. Can see slideshows, convert file formats, browse the directory. I prefer to use image browser rather than photo manager.
XnView also works on Linux. But installing XnView in Ubuntu is troublesome, because we need to remove manually if want to uninstall the package.
However, installing XnView in Arch Linux is easy, using AUR, no problem for uninstallation. But to run XnView in Arch Linux, make sure the xorg-fonts-100dpi package is also installed, and add FontPath to xorg.conf.
Deluge: Bittorrent client for Linux
Once I was using Transmission as the bittorrent client when using Ubuntu. But I found that Transmission is not very nice, because cannot see the detailed information.
Then, I look for the alternative, then I found Deluge. The interface is similar to uTorrent. But uTorrent newer version does not work well under Wine. So, Deluge is my current solution as the bittorrent client. Good!
